Ken Schug

Ken Schug

Ken is a local artist, living on Duck Lake just south of Traverse City, MI. He is the sixth generation to live and work in Northwest Lower Michigan, an avid outdoorsman, who loves exploring, rock collecting, diving, photography, lapidary, and silversmithing.
Ken first got into making jewelry because of an interest in lapidary, cutting and polishing of stones. In 2006 he joined the Grand Traverse Area Rock and Mineral club, learning how to polish, as well as basic silversmithing through the club. Where he quickly took to the silver art form, taking several classes in silverwork and lost wax casting and has been working on his own style. Since learning, Ken feels the need to keep the art form alive by donating time each year, to teaching the basic silversmithing classes for the club members.
In 2011 Down To Earth Designs was established as a business and has produced over a thousand pieces of art, trying never to repeat a design! Ken has his work in several galleries in Michigan and has sales throughout many states and a few countries. Most notable, China, where thirteen sets of Petoskey stone cufflinks and three Petoskey stone pendants were given as gifts by Governor Snyder in 2012!
