Twisted Fish Gallery is presenting a unique northern Michigan art experience in July.  A not-before-seen art exhibit, “From Within — A Departure from Reality,” features the works of 14 area artists who use unconventional approaches to visual experiences.

The free exhibit continues through July 30 at the gallery, 10443 S. Bayshore Dr., one mile south of Elk Rapids. Twisted Fish Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

All of the art in the show reflects a departure from reality in the depiction of imagery in art. Both the artist and the viewer play essential roles in creating each piece. It is the viewer’s interpretation, appreciation and understanding, coupled with the artist’s talent, which brings each piece to life.

The 14 artists may see the world as it exists, but strive to create art from their own personal perspective, considering the full range of their emotions and feelings. Hence the name: From Within.

Artists represented in From Within are Daniel Heron, Dave Krause, Marcia Hales, Jerry Gates, Paul Welch, Ron Gianola, Tony Macioce, Rufus Snoddy, Bill White, Charles Murphy, Del Michel, Joe DeLuca, Cherie Correll and Mary Guntzviller.

“The artworks defy the usual labels of abstract, contemporary, modern, subjective or nonrepresentational,” said Twisted Fish Gallery owner, Bob Streit, who vetted each piece of art for the show. “The lines between the categories are often confusing and debated. However, in all cases, the artistic appreciation, understanding and beauty is in the eye of both the artist and the beholder.”
