Widely considered one of the best art galleries in the State and certainly in Northern Michigan, Twisted Fish Gallery prides itself in offering a spectrum of fine art for the serious collector to the more casual art lover.
Bob and Charlotte Streit are celebrating their tenth anniversary as the owners and operators of the Twisted Fish Gallery and Sculpture Garden in Elk Rapids.
“Before opening Twisted Fish, we visited over 30 galleries and agreed to focus on fine artists who produce truly superior work,” says Bob who is a retired partner with Ernst & Young. “So we decided to build a reputation of offering original art from the best artists of our region and around the state.”
That insistence for quality artwork can be seen in every corner at the Twisted Fish Gallery, and has helped grow the Streit’s reputations as fine art purveyors.
“We have nearly all the same artists represented today as we did when we first opened,” says Charlotte, who was immersed in the arts at an early age by her mother, a noted visual artist. “Every week, we are approached by artists who would like us to take them on. And we often do if they meet our criteria of creating quality work that’s distinctive. We know and appreciate our artists – they are like family.”
The Streits are ably assisted by Katherine Vermeersch, who is a dear friend and employee at the Gallery since its opening.
Gallery and Sculpture Garden
The Gallery features original art for the home, office and yard. About 95 percent of the pieces are from Northern Michigan artists ranging from abstract and contemporary works to the refined and whimsical. Artists are regularly changing their offerings with their latest works, making regular stops at the Gallery a necessity to see what’s new.
Visitors will find varied collections from life-sized metal sculpture of animals and wildlife, fine oil paintings and dazzling watercolors to whimsical pottery, driftwood carvings, hand-blown glass, exquisite jewelry and handcrafted kaleidoscopes.
Not to be missed is a stroll through the Twisted Fish Sculpture Garden on the grounds next to the Gallery. Walk the paths between April and October and enjoy beautifully tended gardens of spring bulbs, daffodils, tulips, summer’s Lenten roses, lupin, iris’ and the fall beauty of chrysanthemums and fire bushes.
Ten sculpture artists have their large to small format outdoor art featured in the garden, including abstract and animal pieces to kinetic, wind-powered artwork.
